Glenridding Hotel

Work is set to begin to revamp a popular Lake District hotel.

North East group the Inn Collection bought the Glenridding Hotel, in Patterdale near Ullswater, last February. It has now revealed that its plans have been given the green light to update the venue.

Plans include a new canopied entrance, new windows and roofs and new signs. As well as alterations to the existing bedrooms, the existing spa area will be removed to create additional bedrooms.

Working as architects and principal designers on the scheme, GSSArchitecture is partnering with the Inn Collection Group across a number of developments in its portfolio, including Ambleside venues The Waterhead Inn and The Wateredge Inn.

Parts of the Glennridding Hotel date back to the 1860s. The hotel was used as a base by British record breaker Donald Campbell during his successful attempt to raise the world water speed record beyond 200mph in July 1955.

Louise Stewart, property director at The Inn Collection Group, said: “The Glenridding Hotel is an iconic site that we were delighted to bring into group and we are excited to get works started on a redevelopment that we are confident guests will love them once completed.

“It is important to us that our renovations bring our own identity but at the same time are respectful of these iconic properties’ heritage.”

Simon Rennison-Rae, Partner at GSSArchitecture said, “We are thrilled that the work at Glenridding has been granted planning permission, which is a great result for the local area and The Inn Collection’s continued investment in the region.

“The historic hotel is in need of some careful renovations that GSS are excited to bring back to life. We are excited to see this project progress on site in the new year!”
