
The L & L Property Contractors Snooker League produced another exciting week on the baize.
However the proceedings were saddened yet again as members mourned the loss of another League stalwart in Station Road and John Street Club ever-present, Peter O’Hagan Sr.
Peter senior, the father of current and recent league players Peter and Stephen, was a popular member of the local snooker community and started his playing days in the late 60’s initially featuring for Station Road Club and later for John Street Club.
Beginning his competitive playing in the old fifth division Peter steadily moved through the tiers, eventually starring at the top of the pile.
Peter was a solid all-round cueist who could beat anyone on his day, and was well liked by all but that didn’t mean he wasn’t a fierce competitor.
This will-to-win was evident every week and one of Peter’s greatest achievements was forming part of a winning league trebles team alongside George Taylor and David Gilmore. Fifty plus teams entered and all off scratch!
Peter featured in the league for nearly 40 years finishing his snooker league days in the early 2000’s, and he will be sorely missed.
The league would like to send sincere condolences to Peter Jr, Stephen and family.
Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
In the latest round of League fixtures the stand-out match featured Division One leaders Workington Golf Club at home to second placed current champions Workington Conservative Club with visitors running out 3-2 winners.
A win for Julian Plaza against the previously unbeaten Bryan Walker put the Cons 1-0 up and with Richard McCarthy being equally impressive in frame two the away side made it 2-0.
Frame three turned out to be the key moment in the match as a re-spotted black was required to decide it.
Using all his years of experience it was Alan Moore who deposited it for an unassailable Cons 3-0 lead which proved crucial in the end as Mark Cowen and Phil Sorfleet both won for the Golf Club A to grab two points in a fascinating contest. The Golf Club A stay top of division 1 on 38 points with Cons second on 35 points.
Division One’s United Club moved closer to Workington Cons in the table on the back of a 4-1 home win against Division Two’s Maryport Social.
Clive Lister opened with a win for the home side and as Dave Chapman won frame two the United Club were soon 2-0 up.
A tactical third frame ended with a victory for Mark Suitor to make it 3-0 to the United Club however Andrew Scott stopped the rot in frame four to pull one back for the Social outfit.
The last frame of the match proved to be a close affair but with Brian Tunstall up to the challenge the United Club ran out 4-1 winners.
The United Club stay third in Division One on 35 points and Maryport Social also remain stationery in Division Two on a fourth placed 17 point total.
Division Two leaders Flimby Social Club delivered another solid home performance to defeat fellow second tier side Workington Golf Club B, 4-1.
A 30 break from Kevin Kirkham was enough to take care of the first frame and with an equally convincing display in the second Richard Kirkham made it 2-0 to the social side.
However, an assured third frame victory by Ryan Pearson brought the Golf Club B outfit back into game only to see Sal Cakmak put Flimby into the match-winning position with a victory in the next for 3-1.
The last frame of the contest produced yet another confident Flimby display as Shane Evitts took the last point for 4-1 match victory.
Flimby are top of Division Two on 31 points with the Golf Club B still bottom, also in Division Two, on nine points.
Finally, Workington’s Station Road Club kept up with their challenge for the Division Two title with a 4-1 win at fellow second tier side, Whitehaven Rack Shack.
Tom Thompson got the ball rolling for Station Road Club with a win in the first and with the fixtures most convincing victory in frame two Chris Hunter put his side 2-0 up.
The Rack Shack weren’t deterred, however, and with a crunching Adam Morilla win in the next the Whitehaven outfit were back in it at 2-1.
The Rack Shack rally was short-lived nevertheless, and with Mike Walker making it 3-1 quickly followed by similarly rapid display in the last Darren Lawson ensured Station Road Club went back to Workington 4-1 to the good.
Station Road Club stay second in Division Two on 28 points with the Rack Shack one place lower on 18 points.
