A Cumbrian Barbarians Veterans side has been formed over the winter – and they have played their first game.
It started before Christmas when a group of ex-players from Keswick and Cockermouth travelled to take on their counterparts from Wigton and Aspatria.
As a result of a splendid game, with new friendships formed, Wigton stalwart Richard Marrs formed the official Cumbrian Barbarians Veterans.
The group of players is growing all the time and at the weekend they played their first game against Ambleside.
The Ambleside side was young, made up mainly of students so it was a test for the older legs.
However the Barbarians rolled back the years, got on the front foot, overloaded at will and attacked from everywhere.
The game was played in a great spirit and try scorers for the veterans included David Ray from Keswick; Craig Muller and Chris Wright from Cockermouth and Heine Jonker from Aspatria.
The next game is due to be an open game for any in the senior age band on March 18 as a curtain raiser to Cockermouth v Wigton with a 1pm kick-off.
Anyone interested should chat to Richard Marrs at Wigton, David Ray at Keswick or Chris Wright at Cockermouth.
