Workington collected their first win of the season in Counties Cumbria when they beat Creighton 22-21 at the Ellis.
Creighton would be disappointed to lose a scrappy game that they really should have won, leading by 14 points with 20 minutes remaining.
The visitors took the lead after quarter of an hour, after quick hands gave winger Tom Riley space to score in the corner. George Dudley added the extra two points with a touchline conversion.
Some weak tackling allowed Workington to level the scores after 30 minutes when Tom Smith got over and Fletcher Creasy converted, and it remained 7-7 at half time.
Ten minutes into the second half prop Carl McDonald made a drive for the line, and although tackled short, ensured quick ruck ball that enabled Steve Cotter to score under the posts. Dudley’s conversion was a formality.
Ten minutes later centre Craig Clapperton made a break from deep and fed winger Joe O’Donnell who raced in from 60 yards. Dudley again added the extras.
At 21-7 Creighton were confident of a positive result, but to their credit the Zebras responded strongly, scoring an unconverted try by Nick Carter on the hour mark from.
The away side conceded a succession of penalties giving Workington good field position. One of those penalties resulted in a successful kick by John McCrickerd to close the gap to six points.
With time running out the Zebras’ man of the match Dean Jones scored under the posts and the resulting conversion from McCrickerd meant Workington had snatched it by a single point.
The Zebras stay bottom of Cumbria Counties Conference 2, two points behind Creighton and from a game more.
