Former Workington and Glasgow rider Steve Lawson is set to become co-promoter alongside Andrew Bain as the new era for the Comets gathers pace at the Northside venue.
Locally-based Lawson said it was a position he was honoured to be asked to undertake.
Having been heavily involved with the design and construction of the new circuit he has put his extensive knowledge to good use, building a racetrack to FIM standards which will provide fast entertaining racing.
Having recently laid the top dressing he will continue to maintain the track throughout the season as track curator alongside his important new role.
From a supporter as a schoolboy when Workington opened in 1970 to a rider with a distinguished career of over 18 years he has retained involvement with the sport since retiring from racing.
He turned his hand to be mechanic and mentor to a number of present day riders including his own son Richard and current GP star Dan Bewley as well as looking after track maintenance at Derwent Park.
Becoming involved on the promotional side of the fence would seem to be a natural step.
Steve, who owns his own motorcycle sales, repair and tuning business rode for the Comets from 1974 until 1977 progressing from a 16 year old reserve to become the Comets number one.
He then moved on to Glasgow where he spent the remainder of his career establishing himself as one of the leading riders of the old National League.
Confirmation of his co-promoter appointment came this week following a meeting with the British Speedway Management Committee where his speedway credentials, although never in doubt, were reviewed and approved.
While actively working on the ongoing infrastructure developments at Northside, he is now looking forward to the opening meeting of the season, set for Saturday 13th of May, with a speedway promoter’s eye on proceedings.
