A South Lakeland church’s plan to transform its vestry into a holiday let has been refused by the council.
Leaders of the Kendal United Reformed Church in Highgate hoped the holiday let would help support the church financially.
The project at the Grade II listed building would have seen a double bedroom with en suite bathroom created in the vestry.
A design and access statement submitted in support of the application said the holiday let, when not in use, could have been used as ‘ancillary to the church assembly’.
But, although listed building permission was granted, full planning consent was denied.
South Lakeland District Council saying the occupiers of the holiday let would have been ‘significantly impacted by noise and disturbance arising from the adjacent community uses’.
The notice of refusal says: “The proposed development would, therefore, give rise to a poor relationship with surrounding uses as it would integrate poorly with the existing community facilities.”
