It’s been almost a year but hooker James Newton is close to a return to action for Whitehaven.

The former Millom amateur who had a spell with Workington Town has been named in Haven’s match squad for the crucial home clash with Swinton Lions tomorrow.

Newton hasn’t figured in a Whitehaven team for almost a year – 351 days to be exact – but he is in the 21 named by coach Jonty Gorley to take on the Lions.

It has been a long road back for Newton after suffering a knee injury but he has been training enthusiastically for a few weeks now.

Alex Bishop, who missed the trip to Featherstone last week, returns to the squad while Jake Bradley and Lasarusa Tabu miss out from the squad named last week.

Whitehaven will choose from: Sam Freeman, Dave Eccleston, Chris Taylor, Curtis Teare, Karl Dixon, Alex Bishop, Liam McAvoy, Connor Holliday, Lachlan Lanskey, Dion Aiye, Jamie Doran, James Newton, Perry Singleton, Jacob Douglas, Marcus O’Brien, Lucas Castle, Josh Rourke, Daniel Spencer-Tonks, Tom Forber, Ross Ainley, Junior Nsemba.

There are some familiar names in the Swinton squad to visit the LEL Arena with Liam Cooper, Dan Abram and Josh Eaves the stand-out ones from their times with Haven.

Swinton will choose from: Dan Abram, Andrew Badrock, Kenny Baker, Louis Brogan, Morgan Burgess, Mike Butt, Jordan Case, Liam Cooper, Mitch Cox, George Delaney, Josh Eaves, Jordan Gibson, Nick Gregson, Jayden Hatton, Rhodri Lloyd, Joe Lowe, Scott Parnaby, Gavin Rodden, Joseph Romeo, Jake Spedding, Luke Waterworth.
