Kendal Town got back to winning ways with an excellent 3-1 home win over AFC Liverpool.
It was a victory they were able to complete without top scorer Tom Kilifin and experienced centre-back Matt Flynn.
Steve Yawson scored twice within five minutes midway through the first-half to give the Mintcakes a 2-0 lead at the break.
The first on 17 minutes was a lovely finish, a curled shot into the top corner after a 20 yard run into the area.
His second was a well-placed header into the bottom corner which gave keeper Jack McGovern no chance.
In between goals, however, the visitors had been reduced to ten men when Jesse Dowling was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident.
AFC Liverpool had a fair bit of pressure at the end of the half, had a good shout for a penalty turned aside, but could not break through a resolute home defence,
Two minutes into the second half the referee did award a penalty – to Kendal – but Rob Wilson saw his spot-kick saved by McGowan.
The visitors then built up a head of steam and had two shots blocked on the line as the Kendal defence again did their jobs bravely in the box.
However on 63 minutes AFC Liverpool pulled a goal back. A ball to the near post saw Tom Croughan get there ahead of home keeper Danny Roccia and he turned it in.
After 70 minutes AFC Liverpool were reduced to nine men when Tom Douglas was sin-binned,
Kendal clinched the win on 80 minutes when Brandon Croskell-Robinson was positioned well at the far post to steer in a corner.
On Tuesday night Kendal resume their League programme when they travel to West Didsbury and Chorlton who are eighth in the table, ten points better off than the Mintcakes from a game less.
Then next Saturday Kendal will visit manager Jimmy Marshall’s old club Milnthorpe Corinthians in the semi-final of the Westmorland County Cup.
Penrith reserves entertain Kirkoswald in the other semi-final.
