Two West Cumbrian councillors have been recognised with a top honour for services to the community.
Marion Fitzgerald and Alan Smith, who serve on Allerdale council, were made freewoman and freeman of the borough – the highest honour the authority can bestow.
Councillor Fitzgerland is currently deputy leader of the council and represents the Dalton wardand Councillor Alan Smith, a former leader of the authority, represents All Saints ward in Cockermouth.
The award is given to local people who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the borough.
Council leader Mike Johnson said: “The role of freeman or freewoman of the borough of Allerdale is for someone who is a person of distinction and who has rendered eminent services to the borough. I very much believe that both Alan and Marion fit that description.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Marion, for everything she has done for Allerdale, and of course, for her support during my time as leader of Allerdale Borough Council – her experience, advice and guidance throughout my tenure has been outstanding.
“Alan also thoroughly deserves the recognition for his time in office and commitment and service to the people of Allerdale.
“Alan has been at Allerdale for almost 28 years. In that time, he has not only been leader, but also served on numerous committees and panels, and also as mayor of Allerdale from 2000 to 2001. This is all testimony to Alan’s commitment to the council and serving the people of Allerdale.”
The award does not convey with it any legal rights or responsibilities, other than a ceremonial role at civic functions.
