Workington Town have signed a third generation member of the Charlton family after a successful trial period.
Luke Charlton, son of Gary and grandson of Paul, has been added to the Workington squad and is in the 19 for tomorrow’s trip to Doncaster in the Challenge Cup.
Coach Anthony Murray said: “Luke came in on trial pre-season and has worked really hard on his fitness which has impressed me.
“He comes from a really good family, who are also well known in rugby league and Paul actually coached me at Barrow.
“I’ve had a word with Jesse Joe Parker, his coach at Hensingham, and he believes he’s ready for the next step up to League One.”
His father Gary has the distinction of playing for all four Cumbrian clubs – Carlisle, Barrow, Whitehaven and Workington – and has coached the two west Cumbrian clubs.
Grandad Paul is a Town Hall of Famer and a true legend of rugby league who was capped 19 times for Great Britain, also coaching Town, Carlisle and Barrow.
Indeed over Christmas and New Year Luke spent time Down Under with Paul who was keen he maintained his fitness regime when he was out there.
Town coach Murray had a boost at Thursday’s training session when Ceiran Walker, who had been ill earlier in the week, put up his hand to play at Doncaster. It means Caine Barnes and Blain Marwood will be the only absentees.
“It’s a bonus having Ceiran available because he’s been playing really well and kicking goals for fun,” said Murray.
This afternoon Murray was going to watch the Challenge Cup tie between Orrell St James and Midlands Hurricanes as the League One side face Town early in the season.
