Workington slid to a 3-0 defeat at City of Liverpool in NPL West – their worst performance of the season.
Manager Danny Grainger was not happy with his side’s performance, particularly as their results away from home have been very good.
“City of Liverpool were the best side by a country mile. They were better in every department, worked hard, battled harder and passed the ball better than we did.
“I think only maybe two or three of my players were anywhere near where they should have been performance-wise.
“It’s worrying from my point of view that it’s happened at this stage of the season when we were looking to finish strongly.
“This has certainly given me food for thought for team selection next week.”
City of Liverpool had taken the lead midway through the first-half when young Kai Nugent, after losing possession tried desperately to win the ball back and gave away a penalty which was despatched by Jack Hazlehurst.
The second came on 64 minutes when a floated cross wasn’t dealt with by the Workington defence and Peter Wylie was able to force the ball home.
There was no way back for Reds and on 77 minutes Kevin Ellison lashed home the third after the home side had broken quickly and decisively.
Reds now have to regroup for Tuesday’s Fred Conway County Cup semi-final with holders Carlisle City at Borough Park.
Next up in the NPL West are Glossop North End who visit Borough Park on Saturday.
