Carlisle Cougars beat Novocastrians 55-7 in their last home game of the season.
After suffering one loss to Novos earlier in the season, and then securing a victory in the follow-up fixture, it was all to play for in the final face-off between the two sides.
Before the start, a minute’s silence was held to remember former Cougar and Cumbria county rugby player Sue Bird, who passed away suddenly last weekend.
Once the whistle went, it was clear Novos arrived with a point to prove. They had a number of strong runners threatening every gap, and it looked likely the visitors would be the first team to score.
However, the Cougars soon got into their stride as their pack executed some excellent scrum and line-out set pieces. It wasn’t long until Carlisle put points on the board with Kim Fitzmaurice driving the ball over the try line.

Carlisle continued to find space out wide with Bethan Lloyd running in an astonishing seven tries throughout the game. Outside centre Sarah Smyth successfully kicked five conversions for Carlisle.
Novos didn’t give up though and they were rewarded for their efforts. After a number of good phases of rugby, the Cougars were unable to stop Novos’ inside centre, who scored their try which was then converted.

Some excellent displays from both teams throughout the game, but the Cougars looked like a well-oiled machine and kept racking up points.
Vanessa Hagen scored Carlisle’s last try of the day after making a great run, with Novos defence unable to stop her.
The Cougars have two more games remaining this season, and will face table toppers Kendal Wasps next Sunday at Mint Bridge.

Carlisle’s Forward of the Match – Chrissie Hadfield; Back of the Match – Sarah Smyth and Player of the Match chosen by the opposition – Bethan Lloyd.
