Long-serving Cumberland scorer Geoff Minshaw has been honoured by being made a life member of the club.
The 59-year-old, a self employed builder, has been the county scorer since 2003.
His cricketing career had started with Workington as a member of their Under-16s team.
“I went to Workington after being asked by Barry Parker while I was at school and I used to catch the bus from where I lived at Broughton Moor.
“It was at Workington that I first started to help the scorer Archie Gibbons by putting the numbers up on the scoreboard.
“In 1986 I decided to move to Whitehaven where I had ten seasons. I played a few second team games but my last game for the club was with the firsts at Lindal where I was number eleven and helped Alan Booth put on a lot of runs for the last wicket.
“That’s where I really started scoring seriously and had 10 years with Whitehaven before joining Cockermouth in 1996.
“John Ellis was the first team scorer then but when he retired three years later I took over the first team book and have done it ever since.
“Cockermouth joined the North Lancs League and had Martin Lewis as pro. It was really Martin who persuaded me to put in for the Cumberland scorer’s job which I got in 2003 and have been doing the job since then,” he says.
Geoff, who is also the secretary of the Cockermouth club, said he was “really chuffed” to receive the honours of life membership.
The Cockermouth club said on their Facebook page: “Huge congratulations to one of our own Geoff Minshaw as he became an honorary life member of Cumbria County Cricket Club.
“As well as his scoring and committee work for Cockermouth Cricket Club, Geoff also scores and is vice chairman for the county set up. We are pleased to see his time and effort being recognised in such a fitting way.”
Geoff is unsure on how many games he’s scored for Cumbria/Cumberland but it will be in excess of 200.
He joins Malcolm Beaty, Eric Carter, Alan Pemberton and Alan Wilson as the County’s current honorary life members.
