Wigton completed their Cumbria Counties Conference campaign with a 29-19 win over Egremont at Lowmoor Road.
Both sides have been hit by injuries so this clash have opportunities to both clubs younger players to shine.
The game was played in wet conditions and it was the ability of Wigton stand-off Billy Stafford to control the tempo of the game, coupled with flanker Will Wilson’s workload, which decided the contest.
Wigton dominated the first half and scored four tries through Charlie Bell (2), Josh Nicholson and Dan Cousins, who was returning after a lengthy injury lay-off.
The Wigton captain Richard Moffat converted two of the tries.
Egremont responded well and were stronger and more effective in the second-half scoring three tries of their own through Nathan Preston (2) and Liam Kirkbride, two of which were converted by Dane Richardson.
Powerful centre Joe Marrs scored Wigton’s final try which went unconverted.
Match sponsor Brookside Garage gave the man of the match award to Will Wilson.
Wigton should have travelled to Ponteland in the first round of the Pape John’s Counties 1 Plate North competition next but the North East side have pulled out of the competition.
However the Lowmoor Road side will now be involved in the South Lakes Cup, a tournament organised by Ambleside and involving themselves, Wigton, Windermere and Furness.
