Workington Veterans Club have repeated last year’s success in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League TKO Plate Handicap competition.
They scored a 3-0 final victory over last week’s Division One play-off champions, Workington’s United Club.
The Division One side produced a dominant display in Workington Golf Club and with the title win the Workington outfit showed what they are capable of.
In the first frame Vets’ Mark Tunstall (+18 handicap) slowly clawed his handicap deficit back against United’s Mark Suitor (+34) and with four reds left Tunstall was ten points to the good.
Suitor wasn’t done, however, and with a mini comeback the United cueist nudged in front as just the pink and black remained. As the frame was now in the balance a strong nerve was required if the win was to be converted with both players looking for that all important opportunity.
Facing a difficult pink Tunstall slotted it home and even through the black was to elude him just a couple of shots later that too was deposited for an excellent 71-50 Vets Club win.
In the next the Vets Club started brilliantly and gained a useful lead. This however didn’t faze United Club’s Andrew Mitchelhill (+13) as the club captain dragged himself back into the game with a contribution of 23.
A finely balanced frame then saw the last three balls remain with the Vets nine points in front. A good pot on the blue left the United Club player needing a snooker and with a Mitchelhill foul on the pink to quickly follow the Vets Club recorded their second victory with 91-65 scoreline.
At 2-0 to the Vets Club the pressure was on the United Club with Division One leading player Peter O’Hagan (+5) faced with the job of resisting it.
Nevertheless, the task couldn’t have been any harder with 10-time league singles champion Kevin Basnett (Scr) sitting in the opposite chair.
A couple of early pots were traded but with nothing on offer from a break building perspective safety became the order of the day.
Eventually a pot presented itself but with O’Hagan rattling it in the pocket jaws Basnett was in. Assessing the situation Basnett then calmly deposited one ball after another and with the break ending at 59 it left O’Hagan needing snookers as the Vets cueist took the frame, match and title with a 70-6 victory in front of an appreciative Workington Golf Club crowd.
