Workington break new ground tomorrow when they visit St Anne’s in the ECB National Cup.
St Anne’s is where Freddie Flintoff played his first junior cricket at the age of 12 and his precocious talent got him into the first team at 14.
But Workington aren’t just going to look at the famous celebrities honoured on the pavilion wall – they are going to be competitive.
Captain Matthew Lowden said: “We want to keep progressing in the National Cup as it’s a great competition for playing at new grounds and against different players.
“There’s no reason why we can’t go to St Anne’s and come away with a win.
“We still have plenty of things to improve on, such as our fielding. We know for instance that good players, maybe dropped on a low score, can go on and punish you.
“There is a great spirit in the team. We know that we have a very solid bowling attack, probably one of the best in the Cumbria League on it’s day.
“So it’s about game management with the bat for us and improving in that department.”
Workington have been boosted by the return to regular cricket of seam bowler Dan McDermott who return to the line-up for the trip to St Anne’s.
There’s also a return for Matthew Gorley, a useful all-rounder who hasn’t played for a while but is trying to make himself more available this time round.
McDermott and Gorley come in for Lewis Hull and Nick Wood who were lining up against Millom in the League this afternoon.
