Cockermouth’s Papa John’s adventure is finally over – a game short of the final at Twickenham.
Another outstanding effort by the Wasps at Essex champions Harlow wasn’t quite enough as they went out of the competition 27-12.
But they could return home with glowing endorsements from the Harlow club who had rarely been tested as much at home during their successful 100 per cent campaign to win the League.
Nobody had scored two tries against them there, but Cockermouth did and for a couple of 10-minute periods in the game looked as though they might just produce another upset having already seen off champions of Durham/Northumberland and Yorkshire.
Harlow, as expected, had made a flying start and took the lead on 15 minutes with an unconverted try.
Gradually, though, Cockermouth got to grips with the contest and shocked their opponents by taking the lead. Strong forward pressure ended with Ant Davies picking up at a ruck and stretching out over the line for the try which Dan Woodcock improved.
That lead lasted until the 38th minute when a training ground move from a scrum put Harlow in for a second try which was converted and they led 12-7 at the break.
A crucial period early in the second-half really settled the tie as Harlow scored two quick tries, converting one for a 24-7 lead.

Cockermouth responded superbly, however, taking the game back to Harlow and when Shane Cusack scored a fine try there was belief they could perhaps pull of the impossible. Woodcock failed with the kick but the Wasps continued to enjoy a good spell of possession and territory.
Unfortunately they couldn’t find another way through a resolute Harlow defence and the only late score was a penalty from the home side.
Cockermouth coach Jeff Clare said: “I did think we could have gone there and managed another win in this competition, such is the commitment and determination of this squad of players.
“But Harlow are a very good side, extremely confident and with an outstanding record this season.
“Although we lost we won lots of praise from the people at the Harlow club who gave us a great send-off when we left. We had given them the hardest game they had faced at home all season.
“I am immensely proud of this group of players who have given absolutely everything. The club has been brilliant and the support on the day from travelling supporters was outstanding.
“I have had some good moments throughout my career in schools rugby and the pro game but this Cup run with Cockermouth has topped it.”
