A group of builders whose droids have appeared in the latest Star Wars films are getting ready to visit Cumbria.
The UK R2-D2 Builders Club will be part of this year’s Windermere Science Festival which will take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May.
Club engineer Mark Leigh will be accompanied by replicas of iconic characters R2-D2 and Chewbacca – both of which will be as screen accurate as replicas can get.
Visitors will be able to interact with the replicas and listen to the stories of how the droids are created and operated.
The club itself is part of a wider international community who build their own robots from the Star Wars universe.
The replicas are so good many of them are considerably more advanced than the film’s originals and are regularly used by Disney for official Disney events.
Some members have been lucky enough to have their droids used on screen in recent Star Wars films.
The festival’s director, Nick Greenall, said: “We’re thrilled that two of the biggest stars to have ever graced our screens have decided to visit Windermere. The club’s droids have featured at major Disney events and can be seen in the latest Star Wars films. So to have them come to Cumbria is truly exciting.”
Windermere Science Festival is a partnership with Lakeland Arts and takes place at the Windermere Jetty Museum.
Last year’s festival attracted more than 1,000 people over two days, with 400 local children engaging in science activities in the run up to the event.
