Overnight cleaning to get rid of chewing gum on West Cumbrian town’s streets

A major overnight street cleaning programme is set to start next week in a West Cumbrian town to get rid of chewing gum and ingrained dirt.

Cumberland Council has announced that contractors will start work in Workington town centre from Monday, aimed at revitalising Washington Square.

Work will start at 6pm each day and continue until 1am to minimise disruption.

Dedicated crews equipped with specialist jet washers and mechanical sweepers will diligently cover the designated areas and the project will conclude on Washington Street.

It is thought the work will take two weeks.

Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “By diligently removing chewing gum and deep-seated dirt, we hope to create a more welcoming environment for our local community and visitors. We appreciate the patience and co-operation of the public and businesses during this work.”

A Cumberland Council spokesman said: “Given the nature of jet washing, precautions will be taken to minimise spray near shop fronts. The cleaning process will be conducted in sections, providing the opportunity for the team to inspect and address any concerns to ensure that frontages remain clean and tidy before moving forward to the subsequent stretch.”
