This weekend’s Holmen Iggesund Cumberland ARL game between Distington and Cockermouth has been called off.
It follows the death in mid-week of a Titans coach David Varty, 53, who had been also a popular former Broughton Red Rose player and coach.
Lorraine Degraffe, the league secretary said: “It’s been a very sad week for amateur rugby league in the area.”
Cockermouth Titans coach Jeff Clare said: “Everyone at the club is shocked and absolutely devastated at the news of Dave’s passing.
“His influence on the growth of the club and his development of individual players is immeasurable. His loss will be felt throughout the region and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
There are two games going ahead on Saturday, both at Maryport, and one of them is a town derby clash.
Maryport will host Ellenborough A fresh from a very good 42-6 home win over Egremont A.
The new coaching team at Maryport, headed by Mark Foster, have been putting their younger players through their paces throughout the season so far and are very pleased with how they’ve performed.
They had 11 aged 20 or under against Egremont and three of them were this season’s Under-16s.
The other game in the town sees Glasson Rangers entertain Kells A which should be the tightest of the week-end fixtures.
Glasson had a 48-36 win over Lowca last week while Kells A did not have a fixture.
The week-end action in the Cumberland ARL gets underway tonight with a Copeland derby as Wath Brow A host Egremont A.
