Workington Comets’ youngster Luke Harrison has pulled out of this Sunday’s British Under 21’s semi-final at Northside.

Harrison, who isn’t 16 until June 15, only returned to race riding on Sunday for the Comets after being hurt in a fall at Scunthorpe.

Although he scored three points from four rides in the 50-40 win over Berwick he reached the decision that he wasn’t quite match fit enough to contest a British semi-final.

Workington will, however, be represented in the prestigious meeting by four of their riders Ace Pijper, Sam McGurk, Elliot Kelly and Harry McGurk.

Two of them were in good form at the week-end in the win over Berwick as Sam McGurk (12) and Kelly (10 + 2) played their part behind number one Connpor Bailey (17 + 1).

McGurk said: “It was challenging for everyone but I feel we learnt a lot and by the end of it I think I figured it out, that’s the main thing, and the team won.”

The Bullets battled all the way with Danny Phillips scoring 10 points, whilst Connor Coles (9) and Jamie Halder (8+2) both worked hard to rebuild machinery after problems on Saturday.

Boss Kevin Little said: “They blew engines at Shielfield and it became a case of down to the workshop and burning the midnight oil to make sure that they arrived at Northside with two competitive bikes.

“That shows a huge commitment to the club and their team-mates which I’m glad was rewarded with a good points return.

“It is the sort of attitude that we want to see from riders at Berwick and is one of the reasons we can still take the positives from the results so far this season.”

Six places are available from the meeting at Northside to join the ten seeded riders in the Final at Glasgow on July 16.

DRAW: 1 Ashton Boughen (Leicester), 2 Vinnie Foord (Leicester), 3 Freddy Hodder (Belle Vue), 4 Kyran Lyden (Edinburgh), 5 Harry McGurk (Workington), 6 Sam McGurk (Workington), 7 Ben Trigger (Plymouth/Mildenhall), 8 Chad Wirtzfeld (unattached), 9 Max James (Leicester), 10 Ace Pijper (Glasgow/Workington), 11 Nathan Ablitt (Scunthorpe/Kent), 12 Elliot Kelly (Workington), 13 Max Perry (Leicester), 14 Jody Scott (Oxford), 15 Mickie Simpson (Edinburgh), 16 Sam Hagon (Belle Vue). Reserves: 17 Kai Ward (unattached), 18 Jack Shimelt (unattached).
