Workington Reds announce more re-signings and another departure

Workington Reds have confirmed two more re-signings and another departure as Danny Grainger puts together his squad for the 2023/24 season.

Goalkeeper Danny Eccles and utility man Steven Rigg are staying with the Borough Park club but Ben Hughes is moving on.

Eccles, 26, has been the understudy to Jim Atkinson for three seasons now and has never let down the side when called upon for limited opportunities.

The Barrow-based goalkeeper said: “I’m really pleased to be staying with Workington for another season. The last one was special and it was good to get the rewards that we deserved.

“The group of lads are brilliant and I’m looking forward to helping the team kick on again and hopefully make the season as successful as the last.”

Versatile Rigg, 30, has shown he can play centre, back centre mid-field and centre-forward, making him a valuable member of the squad.

He said: “I’m looking forward to the challenge of a new league and testing myself and my team against better teams.”

Hughes, 23, who joined Reds a year ago from Marine, has had wretched luck with a back injury which kept him side-lined for most of the season.

He said: “I would just like to say a huge thanks to all the fans. Your support both on and off the field has been outstanding.

“It’s not the season I was hoping for, however, I’ve still loved every miniute and it was a pleasure to be a part of such a great squad.

“Finally I’d just like to wish you all the best and good luck for the future.”

Grainger added: “I’m gutted for Benno as he had a great start to the season before his freak injury and I’m sure he would have had a huge input into the team had he been fit.

“He had a great attitude and he has nothing but my best wishes as he tries to get himself back up to his levels of performance.”
