Lake District Hotels group is offering free gin and tonic’s in exchange for cucumbers.

The unusual exchange is taking place on Friday June 16 to celebrate World Cucumber Day and all of the firm’s Keswick hotels are involved.

Taking place in a ‘happy hour’ the trading period will run from 4pm to 5pm. Participating bars include the Front Bar and Back Bar at the Inn on the Square, the bar and conservatory at the Skiddaw Hotel and the newly refurbished Kings Arms bar which are all located in the town’s Market Square.

People taking part must bring in a fresh cucumber and those who do will be rewarded with a Hendricks Gin and Fever-Tree Tonic.

Cucumbers play an important role in the distillation of Hendrick’s Gin with the drops having flavour notes of the vegetable.

Typically, Hendrick’s cocktails are also supposed to be completed with a slice of cucumber – prompting the brand to set up their World Cucumber Day campaign which has run since 2018.

In anticipation of the influx of cucumbers, Lake District Hotels group are running an additional competition asking for recipe suggestions on what the hotels can do with all the green vegetables.

Suggestions can be emailed to [email protected] and the best idea will be selected as the winner. The winning entrant will receive a bottle of Hendricks Gin to celebrate.

Only one drink is permitted per person and drink substitutions are not permitted.

Cucumbers can only be exchanged for a gin and tonic between the hours of 4pm-5pm on Friday 16th June. Drink substitutions are not permitted.
