Four well-balanced fixtures for Cumberland Amateur Rugby League

The Holmen Iggesund Cumberland Amateur Rugby League appears to have four well balanced fixtures this weekend.

Three of them go ahead tonight with Maryport at home to Lowca facing up to each other at the Athletic Ground tomorrow afternoon.

Maryport are playing their first game since they surprised Wath Brow A in the final of the E Lamb and Son Amateur Cup a fortnight ago.

That deserved victory against one of the best teams in the League should be an enormous morale booster for the Maryport club, who have been revived this season under a new enthusiastic coaching group.

Lowca have held their own in most of the matches they have been involved in without quite getting the results that their efforts have deserved, so an intriguing contest is prospect.

Of course everything, or certainly a lot, depends on the strength of the line-ups being put out by the respective clubs and at this time of the season other engagements – weddings, stag trips, holidays – start to have an impact.

Distington look the strongest team in the competition, well placed to go on and dominate in League and Cumberland Cup.

Tonight is one of their tougher asks on paper when they visit Kells A, always capable of turning in a performance if able to put out a competitive side.

Egremont A haven’t had much joy as far as winning performances are concerned but they have stayed in matches and their home clash with Glasson Rangers should be competitive.

Glasson have some good winning performances on their record and will be hopeful of adding another two points to their collection.

The third game tonight gives a quick opportunity for Cockermouth to exact revenge for last week’s  rather surprise 34-24 home defeat by Hensingham A.

Hensingham, who were collecting their first win of the season, have ground advantage this time and will feel fairly confident of racking up a quick League double, although the Titans will travel in the belief that they can square matters.

As mentioned earlier, though, all depends at this time of the season in how strong the respective line-ups are.

Tonight: Kells A v Distington (ref Rob Scott, ko 7pm); Egremont A v Glasson Rangers (Neil Byers, ko 7-45pm); Hensingham A v Cockermouth (Trevor Dryden, ko 7pm).

Tomorrow: Maryport v Lowca (Ron Ainsworth, ko 2-30pm).

League table: Wath Brow, played 4, won 4, pts 8; Distington 3, 3, 6; Kells A 4, 3, 6; Cockermouth 4, 3, 6; Maryport 5, 2, 4; Lowca 4, 1, 2; Glasson 3, 1, 2; Egremont A, 5, 1, 2; Ellenborough A 4, 1, 2; Hensingham A 4, 1, 2.
