A judge has postponed the sentencing hearing of a Carlisle man who admits trying to murder a woman by stabbing her repeatedly outside a city address.
Matthew Ryan, 38, was charged after an incident which took place in front of witnesses at Ellesmere Way on the afternoon Saturday December 17 last year.
When Ryan was brought before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, a prosecutor said the woman, aged in her 50s, had been stabbed multiple times, primarily to the torso and back.
in the aftermath of the shocking attack, she was transported to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with three confirmed major stab wounds and underwent surgery. She had been placed in an induced coma and was initially in a critical condition before later being discharged.
Ryan, of Bannisdale Way, Carlisle, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court in April and admitted attempting to murder the woman.
A judge ordered the preparation of a psychiatric report and adjourned the case. Ryan was due to have been sentenced at the crown court on Monday of next week.
But when the case came before Judge Nicholas Barker this morning, he postponed the sentencing hearing to allow more time for the psychiatric report to be completed and considered.
Detailed background information about Ryan will assess the risk of future serious harm he potentially poses to the public.
Ryan is now due to receive his punishment in court on August 4 and in the meantime he remains remanded in custody.
