Wigton have appointed a new first team captain for the 2023/24 season.

Hard-working prop forward Ryan Wannop, 28, takes on the role. He has come through the youth ranks at the club and is looking forward to getting started.

He will be supported as vice-captain by Joe Marrs, who like Wannop is a farmer.

Coach David Warwick said: “They are both farmers so I’m hoping between them their hard graft inspires the team.

“Ryan is actually very underrated in my opinion. He has good hands and sharp footwork for a big lad.”

Elliot Armstrong has been appointed as the overall club captain of the rugny programmes.

Training at Lowmoor Road is now entering its fourth week and over 45 different players have attended, with an average of 32 at each session.

The Under-18s are starting their pre-season tonight, Thursday, and are looking forward to a revamped North East League with clubs from Durham and Northumberland involved in a 12-team competition.

Warwick added: “We always welcome anyone interested in joining club training sessions which are at Lowmoor Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm.”
