The a large section of the A596 will be closed overnight for roadworks to be carried out this month.

The section of road from Birkby to Thursby is undergoing the improvement work and a rolling closure of the road will be carried out

Work will start on the Birkby to Prospect section of the road from this Sunday, July 9 to Friday, July 14.

It will be completed as a rolling road closure in the following sections:

  • Birkby to Crosby for three nights,
  • Crosby to Crosby Villa for two nights and
  • Crosby Villa to Aspatria for five nights

Resurfacing work will then take place through the night from Friday July 14 to Thursday July 20 from Prospect to Aspatria, with a full road closure.

From Thursday July 20 to Wednesday July 26, work moves to the Wigton to Thursby section with a rolling road closure.

Cumberland Council, which is co-ordinating the work, said the work is being carried out in the evenings to ensure there is no disruption to traffic during the day.

Diversions will be in place and traffic marshals will be on site to escort residents’ vehicles through the roadworks.

Access will be maintained for emergency services during the works.
