An aggressive man once dubbed a thorn in the side of Whitehaven has been jailed for committing more offences.
Carlo Raymond Bone, now 38, was issued with a criminal behaviour order late in 2021 as attempts were made to curb his persistent illegal activity.
A judge had heard how Bone assaulted one shop worker and made grabs for two lone women in Whitehaven town centre.
When tackled about alleged shoplifting, Bone had warned the B&M Bargains employee “I’m going to smash your head in”. That left the previously anxious woman needing stronger medication.
The judge imposed an indefinite order with tough conditions after a prosecutor submitted it was needed to prevent Bone from continuing to be a perpetual thorn in the side of the people of Whitehaven.
But Bone and the judge, His Honour Richard Archer, crossed paths again today at Carlisle Crown Court.
Andrew Evans said this had occurred at Whitehaven’s Aldi store on March 14. With the premises packed with customers, Bone was observed to be talking to himself and rambling.
After being taken to task by a store boss about more apparent shop theft, he responded with foul mouthed abuse.
“He said ‘I know where you live’ and named the area where she lived with her children,” said Mr Evans. “The defendant lunged towards her. She feared she would be head-butted.”
There was then another incident outside the store where Bone behaved illegally towards a colleague of the woman.
Four days earlier Bone had stolen more than £250-worth of cosmetics from Whitehaven’s Boots store. And in August last year he shouted and made threats on a town street.
He admitted two breaches, theft and a public order charge.
Defence lawyer Sean Harkin said Bone’s issues stemmed from substance misuse and homelessness. There were breaks in his criminal offending, suggested Mr Harkin, who added: “He is capable of staying out of trouble.”
But Judge Archer, noting the order appeared to be having little or no effect, jailed Bone, of no fixed address, for 12 months.
Two new conditions were added to the order. He was banned from entering any retail premises which is part of the Whitehaven Shopwatch scheme. He was also banned from being in Whitehaven town centre between 9am and 7pm except for agreed prearranged appointments with professionals trying to help him.
Existing order conditions prohibit Bone both from consuming alcohol in public places other than licensed premises; and being drunk in any public place in Cumbria.
