Cumbria lost by seven wickets to Bedfordshire in their opening fixture at Furness in the NCCA Championship.
Resuming on the final day, still in arrears and with four batsmen already dismissed, it was a tough ask for the home side.
Middle order partnerships of 42 (between Sam Dutton and Michael Slack) and 66 (between Slack and Matthew Sempill) did at least save the innings defeat.
A tenth wicket partnership of 24 between Sam Sharp and Ben Davidson (batting at number 11 due to a hand injury) meant they were eventually all out at lunch but left the visitors only needing 68 in 72 overs to win the game.
Matt Coles picked up five more wickets and ended the match with impressive figures of 11/87.
Bedfordshire had secured victory by just after 2.30 pm for the loss of just three wickets to take 22 points while Cumbria had to settle for four.
The game saw four players (Harry Gouldstone twice, on debut) reach 40 but there were no half centuries. Slack top-scored for Cumbria with 46 in the second innings and Ben Walkden 42 in the first.
Danyaal Khalid (46) top-scored for Bedfordshire in their first innings.
Cumbria now must re-focus on what has proved to be their best discipline in recent years – the 50-overs game.
