A former soldier has pleaded not guilty to a serious and allegedly intentional attack on his mother.

Paul Neil Fearon, 41, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court this morning following an incident at an address in Wigton on April 23 in which Wendy Fearon suffered multiple injuries.

These are said to have included a broken rib, two suspected separate rib breaks, a punctured lung. She underwent hospital treatment and been fitted with a chest drain having also undergone a CT scan.

Fearon attended court remotely over a video link for a short hearing in front of Recorder Tony Hawks.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to a charge which alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously caused his mother grievous bodily harm with intent to do so.

It was indicated that a lack of intent was the key point of Fearon’s defence.

He is now due to stand trial in front of a jury at the crown court in the week of September 11.

In the meantime Fearon, of Stricklandgate, Penrith, remains remanded in custody.
