Sydney Roosters have signed the former Workington Town winger Alex Young on a contract for the 2024 NRL season, according to reports.

Alex, 24, represented Jamaica at last year’s delayed 2021 World Cup in England, and currently features for Newcastle Thunder in the Championship.

He made the move to the north-east from Workington Town ahead of the 2023 season under head coach Chris Thorman who had signed him at Workington.

Fox Sports have reported that Alex has signed a contract for the 2024 campaign on a development deal, with the mutual option to join the club’s top 30 in 2025.

Furthermore, the reports state that the winger turned down three Super League contracts following last year’s World Cup to finish his degree in law.

“He feels as though he can play NRL, the World Cup made him realise that he got the desire to get back to full time playing,” Young’s agent Michael Cincotta told Fox Sports.

Although yet to be confirmed by the club, his brother England international Dominic is also expected to link up with the side at the completion of the 2023 campaign on a four-year deal from Newcastle Knights.

The ex-Huddersfield youngster, 21, has scored 36 tries in 42 appearances in the competition Down Under.

Older brother Alex has made more than 50 professional appearances, including 41 for former club Workington Town.

He made his international debut for the Reggae Warriors during last year’s campaign, named on the wing for the Group C match against Ireland at Headingley Stadium in the country’s first ever World Cup.

Alex also featured in the 74-12 defeat to Lebanon during the group stages which saw Michael Cheika’s side qualify for the quarter-finals.
