Two in court after violence flares at Carlisle lap dancing club

Two men have appeared in court accused of affray after they allegedly engaged in violence which flared both inside and outside a Carlisle lap dancing bar.

Aaron Sewell, 31, and 21-year-old Jacob Evans were charged after an incident which is said to have occurred in and around Rouge, on Englishgate Plaza, off Botchergate, in the early hours of Sunday, July 30.

Sewell and Evans appeared separately in the dock at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court. Neither man entered a plea to the affray charge they face. Sewell also chose not to enter a plea to a second allegation he alone faces — that of assaulting an emergency worker on the same date.

Providing an outline of the alleged circumstances, prosecutor George Shelley alleged: “This is an incident which started in the nightclub. There was violence in the nightclub which spilled out — following ejection — into the car park area.”

The incident had occurred “over a sustained period of time”, alleged Mr Shelley, and was captured on CCTV footage.

A police constable had suffered cuts and grazes, the court heard.

District judge Timothy Gascoyne committed the case of both men to Carlisle Crown Court.

Evans, of Southwaite, was remanded in custody.

Sewell, of South Street, Carlisle, was granted bail by the district judge. Several conditions were attached to his bail and these prevent Sewell having any contact with his co-accused and from entering the Rouge premises.

The men are due to appear in front of a judge at the crown court on August 29.
