Barrow couldn’t follow up their fine opening day win at Tranmere when they took on Bolton in the Carabao Cup and went down 1-0.
It was a game the home side dominated for long periods but had to rely on a 44th minute strike by West Brom loanee Zac Ashworth to make progress.
The percentage possession stats of 78-22 in Bolton’s favour give an indication of how the game was played, and the fact that Barrow didn’t get a shot on target also told a story.
Former Barrow manager Ian Evatt enjoyed a successful season with the Trotters and they look as though they will be challenging for honours again.
The goal at the end of the first-half was a lovely strike from Ashworth, curling a free-kick beyond Paul Farman.
They had been in virtual total control but could not find a way to beat Farman until Ashworth struck after George Ray had fouled Cameron Jerome just outside the area.
The Bluebirds really won all their medals in defence as they dug in as Bolton dictated and dominated proceedings without being able to give themselves the cushion of a second goal.
That almost came late in the game but Farman produced a fine save to deny Victor Adeboyjeo.
