The Harrogate hoodoo continues – as Carlisle’s long search for a win against the Yorkshire side goes on.
The Carabao Cup first round tie was the setting for this latest disappointment as Town again proved to be a bogey team for the Cumbrians.
They went through by a solitary first-half goal as Carlisle spurned a chance to take it to penalties when they missed from the spot in the 76th minute.
Taylor Charters was brought down in the box but from the resultant penalty Ryan Edmondson sent the keeper the wrong way but then watched as his effort went the wrong side of the post.
The only goal of the game came on 23 minutes when Jon Mellish was dispossessed in the centre circle by Matt Daly. He slid a lovely through ball for Folarin to chase, and he held off Sam Lavelle before finishing accurately into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Carlisle boss Paul Simpson changed things at half-time making four substitutions with Edmondson, Callum Guy, Sean Maguire and Jack Robinson on for Jack Armer, Jordan Gibson, Lavelle and Dylan McGeouch.
His fifth change came in the 71st minute, just before the penalty award, when Danny Butterworth replaced Luke Plange.
He was lively for United and had two late efforts which had to be dealt with by home keeper Mark Oxley but six minutes of time added on could not produce an equaliser.
