A ‘proper’ West Cumbrian sign appeared at a golf club yesterday, causing much amusement.
A picture of the sign, saying ‘Warning wet pent’, was posted on Workington Golf Course’s Facebook page, and people started commenting almost immediately.
One person said: “Divent get pent ont rope, as jus weshed it” and another added: “Divent tutch”.
One of the most famous Cumberland dialect signs says ‘Tek care, lambs on’t road’ which has now appeared on postcards, tea towels and other memorabilia for tourists.

It’s not clear if Wukiton Golf Club intend to do the same……

And this sign was spotted by Dave, in the Prospect area, near Aspatria.
It’s important to keep this dialect alive – should Cumbria Crack compile a dictionary of Cumberland dialect? If it’s something you’d like us to do and can provide us with some entries, please email [email protected]
