This weekend sees the return of the Barrow Soapbox Derby.
Taking place in the town centre tomorrow, Saturday August 19, the event will see karts hurtling down a 340 metre course on Dalton Road.
Spectators will be able to line the street to watch the racing action and cheer for their favourite teams.
The pit area is behind the start ramp, allowing the public to be able to view the karts and interact with the teams in between racing.
New to this year’s event will be the addition of obstacles, including a splash zone, which competitors will have to carefully negotiate to make it over the finish line in the fastest time possible.
There will also be prizes awarded for categories including the most innovative cart design and best turned-out soapbox crew.
An accessible viewing area will be created by the statue at the top of Portland Walk. Ear defenders will also be available at this location to help those with autism to also enjoy the event.
It has been organised by Barrow BID and is sponsored by BAE Systems.
Jenny Fazackerley, BID chair, said: “We are really excited to have the Soapbox returning to Barrow this year. Following feedback from both businesses and the general public, we have made some significant changes to this year’s event, with a massive focus on keeping everything local and creating a more fun, community feel to the day.
“Lots of consideration has been given to developing the soapbox derby into a family event that everyone can enjoy and be a part of.”
Paul Hodgson, BID project manager, added: “It’s great to be able to see the soapbox race back in Barrow again this year.
“This will be the town’s third Soapbox, with Team Ørsted and Furness College (Scott’s Crafty Crew) winning our first two events. We are very grateful to once again have BAE Systems supporting us this year as our main sponsor. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back for the Barrow Soapbox Derby!”
