A historic piece of West Cumbrian history that went missing earlier this week has now been found.

The search for Egremont Crab Fair’s gurning ‘braffin’ – a horse collar that is put over the head of people taking part in the fair’s gurning competition – ended after it was found stored away safely in a loft.

An Egremont resident came forward with the object and explained it had been there for two years after being used for a charity event.

It is the only braffin used for the gurning competition and is regularly lent out to local schools, organisations and groups by the fair’s committee.

This year marks the first time the 756-year-old Crab Fair will go ahead after four years of cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Her Majesty’s death.

Committee chairman Callum Scott said he was happy that the historically significant object had been found safe and that it was a relief to not have to find a replacement.
