The Football League World website, and author Jonathan Davies, have made a major boob in a new article on Carlisle United.
Surprisingly he has John Sheridan out in front on 46.9% ahead of present boss Paul Simpson on 44.1.
Even former chairman Michael Knighton, much maligned for the time he took over as manager, is included in ninth on 27.9.
But the man, who has previously been voted Carlisle’s greatest ever manager Alan Ashman is nowhere to be seen.
In his first spell at the club, from 1963 to 1967 Ashman led United on successive promotions from the Fourth Division to the Second Division.
He won 111 of his 223 matches in charge before taking over at West Bromwich Albion, which gives him a percentage of 49.78.
Even when you factor in his not-so-successful second term as Carlisle boss from 1972 to 1975 when he won 54 of 159 games (33.96%) his overall strike rate over the two spells was 43.19.
That would put him third in the list behind Sheridan and Simpson.
Davies seems to have ignored United managers from another era because the great Bill Shankly would have topped even Ashman.
He was in charge from 1949 to 1951 and his team played 108 times under him, with 48 of them producing victories for a 44.44% win rate.
Then there was Ivor Powell, 1960 until 1963 who took charge of 130 Carlisle games. He won 46 of those for a 35.38% strike rate.
Even Tim Ward had a season with 52 games in charge, 14 victories and a win rate of 26.92% which would be just outside Davies’ top ten.
Clive Middlemass was another manager who would have made Davies’ top ten but no stats have been available.
The author only includes: 10. Keith Millen 27.3; 9. Michael Knighton 27.9; 8. Chris Beech 31.8; 7. Steven Pressley 34.2; 6. Greg Abbott 35.1%; 5. Neil McDonald 37.3; 4. Keith Curle 38.2; 3. John Ward 41.9; 2. Paul Simpson 44.1; 1. John Sheridan 46.9.
