Kian Spence came up with a superb strike to sink his hometown club as Barrow won 1-0 at Harrogate.
After 13 unsuccessful visits to Harrogate the Bluebirds had finally broken their hoodoo, but as well as Spence’s effort they needed heroics from goalkeeper Paul Farman.
Rory Feely had thrown up an arm in the box and made contact with Anthony O’Connor’s header and the penalty was awarded.
Jack Muldoon went down the middle of the goal but it was a weak effort and easily saved by Farman.
Spence had joined Barrow from National League side Halifax and had opened his account at Holker Street last month with a spectacular strike.
This second effort came after 21st minute when he let fly from 25 yards with an angled shot which rocketed beyond home keeper Mark Oxley.
It took two good saves from Farman to keep Barrow in front at half-time when he went full length to turn Matty Foulds’ header round the post.
Afterwards Barrow boss Pete Wild said: “I put the players and staff under a bit of pressure for this one as I said it was one we were going to win.
“I thought we were excellent, and in a new formation which we have been working on. I thought we had to change something against Harrogate and they did play very much as they had done last season.”
