Following their high-scoring game away to Darlington RA midweek, Windscale were involved in another goal feast.
They visited Annfield Plain in the first round of the Alan Hood Charity Cup coming away with a win from the dreaded penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw.
Following some good early play, the Atoms took the lead in the 19th minute. Ray Sempill sent a ball across the face of goal to Leo Brennan who found the net at the back post.
Annfield Plain responded with an equaliser in the 32nd minute, then took the lead just prior to the turnaround.
The Atoms were level 11 minutes into the second half. Lewis Jolly stuck the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the 18 yard box, but the ball fell to Will Rooke who directed his header away from the keeper and into the Annfield net.
The hosts retaliated with their third goal to take the lead for a second time with 22 minutes left to play.
The Atoms continued to battle away and were rewarded two minutes from the final whistle. A well worked set piece eventually found the feet of Andrew Begbie who made no mistake in restoring parity.
The Competition rules stating that the winners would be decided on penalty kicks without going first to extra-time..
It was advantage to the visitors when the first effort from Annfield Plain sailed high over the Atoms crossbar. Windscale allowed the hosts back into it when their third effort failed to find the back of the net.
The competition progressed with the Atoms sixth penalty giving them the initiative at 5-4, leaving Annfield Plain having to score to remain in the tie.
It was Atom’s custodian, Lee Jolly, who took centre stage by saving the kick to put Windscale into the hat for the next round.
