Parkside retained the leadership of the West Cumberland Sunday League’s Premier Division – but only just!
In the latest round of Thursday night matches they were trailing 2-0 at half-time to last season’s Egremont Sunday League champions Lowca Pirates and had to dig deep for a 3-2 win.
Jordan Parker and Owen Woodburn had put the Pirates ahead before the Parkside rallied and two of their players better known with Wath Brown Hornets rugby league club, saw them through to victory.
Jay Weatherill scored two of them and Ellison Holgate supplied the third goal which kept Parkside at the head of affairs.
Northside, the reigning Workington Sunday League champions, are right behind but their three points last night came from a walk-over.
Scheduled opponents Thornhill were unable to raise a side, which isn’t good news considering the Egremont club were given extra grace to prepare for the season by starting later than everyone else.
There are new leaders in Division One where the Sun Inn made it five wins in as many games. It was a crucial win too as Senhouse Street were also up there among the leading group.
Sun Inn led 2-1 at half-time and scored the only goal of the second half to collect the points. Louie Elliot (pen) and Josh Graham were on target and they also had the help of an own goal with Dan Smith replying for Senhouse Street.
FC Butcher’s are only a point behind but they have played two more games than the League leaders.
Lewis Mattinson and Cieran Laverty scored in a 3-0 win over the Swan, and they also had the assistance of an own goal.
The other Division One game proved to be a real goal feast – ten of them actually, and shared equally in the end between the Royal Oak and the King’s Arms.
Seven of the goals came in the first-half when Royal Oak edged it 4-3 and when things quietened down after the break it was the King’s Arms who had the better of things to square the match 5-5.
Kieran Fraser, Josh Wise, Tyler Bower, Kian Hoey and Jack Wordsworth scored for the Royal Oak while Ryan Nicholls (2), Luke Youdale, Brendon Tolson and Dale Anderton ensured the King’s Arms went home with a point.
Sunday’s fixtures are:- Lowca Pirates v Bluebell; Moresby Rangers v Northside; Parkside v Dearham Commercial.
Division One:- Salterbeck v Sun Inn; Seaton Rangers v Senhouse Street Club; The Sun v Flimby Social.
