A 12-year-old Workington boy – with an impeccable sporting pedigree – completed a fine golfing double over the weekend.
James Wareing was contesting two finals at Silloth and Workington – and he won them both.
A pupil at Keswick School, James won the Green Tee Junior Championship at Silloth on Saturday and then followed up 24 hours later at Workington where he won the Junior Knockout.
The youngster started playing golf about three years ago but only became serious this season during which time his handicap has fallen from 44 to 27.
His grand-father on his mother’s side is Adrian Drabble, former professional at Workington while on the other side of the family grandfather Keith Wareing, a more than useful golfer, opened and ran the Distington Golfing Range for many years.
And if that isn’t enough his great grandfather Jimmy Wareing was a star forward for Workington Town playing 189 games in the club’s early days and being a member of the club’s Challenge Cup winning side.
James’ dad Bob is also a keen golfer, but he was outdone by his son on Saturday. For while James was winning the Silloth competition Bob was losing in the semi-final of the club championship.
During the year James has also been on the Northern Junior Tour, contesting the Intermediate Boys section and has had successes. One of his wins qualified him for the Champion of Champions final to be held in Ireland next July.
