Carlisle Flag American Football side the Border City Centurions have welcomed the news that their sport will now be included in the Olympics.
The international Olympic Committee has agreed that Flag American Football will be added to the programme for the 2028 LA Olympics.
Border City Centurions, made up of players from both sides of the border, exploded onto the UK scene earlier this year with an unprecedented run that took them all the way to the British National Finals in Manchester last month.
With players drawing attention from Team GB coaches and invitations to trials in discussion, the region has suddenly found itself as a key hunting ground for scouts seeking athletes who are ready to step up to the Olympic stage, the side said.
Flag is a rapidly growing, high-skill based format of non-contact American Football. Already embraced by the NFL and now the IOC, the game has been taking the sports world by storm over the past decade around the globe.
The Border City Centurions have witnessed this new dawn and are currently riding high on interest, with squads for both adult and junior players to join.
The club’s growth has already has surpassed over 100 members. It is affiliated to the British American Football Association and play in the UK National Flag Football League’s Division 1.
The club is open to all – men and women, boys and girls. No previous experience (or even kit) is required thanks to sponsors.
