Cumbria rugby union might have stopped on Saturday for the World Cup but it didn’t stop two of the county’s Under-18s side squaring up on Sunday.
Cockermouth took on Wigton at Strawberry How and emerged the winners by 39-12.
It was still very tight at half-time with Cockermouth in front 13-7 thanks to tries from Dillon Nicholas-Scott and Ethan Black, plus a penalty by Tom McDowell.
Wigton were still very much in the contest with a try from scrum-half Josh Sloan which he converted himself.
But Cockermouth were able to pull clear in the second-half adding four more tries through Leuan Jennings, Danny Herbert, Black and Ollie Denvir with McDowell adding three conversions.
Wigton’s man of the match full-back Euan Fletcher scored an unconverted try for the visitors.

Colts coach Stephen Reed said: “Our first half was not as goiod as we wanted with too many penalties and we created a lot of loose ball.
“The team was playing very disjointed and not sticking to the game plan, although in front.
“After a re-set at the break we were like a different side, playing more direct and with honest plays, backing our ability.
“It was solid set play at line-out and scrums. Rugby played well but simple can be very effective.”
Cockermouth’s senior coach Chris Wright added: “It was fantastic to watch our Colts over the last two weeks. The coaching team have done a great job with them.
“Excellent at the basics, and once they go forward from their impressive front five, they have dangerous players all over the park who can exploit the gaps presented.”
