Ged McKeating, a former secretary of the Workington Sunday League and a well-known local sports fan, has died.
Football was his first love, playing for a number of Workington sides, and in later life was a very keen supporter of Workington Comets speedway.
A goalkeeper in his younger days he started with St John’s and then Civil Service in the Sunday League, as well as British Steel in the West Cumberland League.
He is well remembered by another former Workington Sunday League secretary, Ron Caffrey.
Ron wrote on Facebook: “I knew Ged. He came to work at Thame Board Mills, when I was in the sawmill, back in the late 1970s.
“After playing local football he became a referee in the Sunday League and also joined the league committee as the referee’s secretary.
“He held the position for a number of year until I replaced him around 1983.
“At this point Ged became the assistant league secretary before moving on to be the league secretary for a number of years.
“Ged owned Simpson’s sport shop with his wife on the corner of Finkle Street and William Street, for a number of years, while he was working at Thame Board Mills (now Iggesund), before the family moved to Curwen Street.
“Ged was also a Special Constable for a number of years in his spare time.
“To his wife and family, my wife Jean and I would like to send our sympathy and prayers at this time.”
