Two stalwarts of Workington Victoria Flying Club, Jimmy Hadfield, who has 60 years a member and Les Blacklock 50 years as secretary.

Stalwart members of the Workington Victoria club were honoured at the club’s presentation night in the Union Jack Club.

The club was actually celebrating 100 years since it was formed and two members present have been heavily involved in that time.

Les Blacklock, a respected administrator in the sport as well as admired distance flyer, has completed 50 years as club secretary.

He had followed his father Jim into the sport and was the club’s youngest-ever secretary when he took on the role in 1972 from Harry Graham as a raw 17-year-old.

Members had bought Les a specially inscribed watch and Jimmy Nelson, Chairman of the Cumbria Region presented him with it – and left him stuck for words.

Like Les, club chairman Jimmy Hadfield started in the sport with his dad Joe and has been a member of the club for 60 years. He was presented with a special certificate to mark the occasion.

There was also a presentation of a silver salver  to Meryl Blacklock for her services to the Victoria club over a number of years.
