A man who carried out an attack with a shovel – leaving the victim with facial injuries which required stitches – has been jailed today.
John Park, 35, of Evening Hill, Thursby, had denied a charge of GBH but was found guilty following a trial on November 2 and sentenced today Friday December 1 at Carlisle Crown Court.
The court heard how the victim had heard noises whilst sleeping in his home – a farm in the Stainton area on 27 December 2021.
He went to the front door to investigate and, upon opening the door, was struck in the face with the blade end of the shovel.
The victim was then involved in a battle at his front door to keep Park out, which eventually resulted in the shovel breaking in half and Park fleeing the area.
The victim was left with facial injuries which required stitches.
Park was found guilty and sentenced today to five years.
Detective Constable Karen Minnion, Cumberland CID, said: “This was a brutal and violent attack on a man who was in his own home late at night.
“The victim of the assault told police he thought the noises outside might be someone broken down who needed his help. Instead he opened the door to a man wielding the blade-end of a shovel towards his face.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the victim in this case for his courage throughout the process, which has taken almost two years but resulted in the sentence we see today.”
