A glass canopy at one of the entrances of Carlisle’s Lanes Shopping Centre is set to be removed.
Carlisle Shopping Centre Ltd, which runs the Lanes, has applied for planning permission to dismantle the canopy, over an entrance on Lowther Street, to help market empty units.
It has asked Cumberland Council for the go-ahead. Its application said it was a “structure that to all intents and purposes is highly dated in appearance and detracts from the overall attractiveness of the conservation area”.
The application said the dismantling of the canopy would be co-ordinated to make sure there was minimum disruption to shoppers and traders.
The glazed walkway to the rear of the site will be kept for the comfort of shoppers, the application said.
