Workington Comets have made history as the first British speedway club to sign a female rider.

The Comets have announced their fifth signing is German International, SGP2 rider and female world number one – Celina Liebmann.

Celina is now the first female rider to join a professional club in the history of British speedway. She also made history in 2022 when she became the first woman to appear in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series (SGP2).

The 22-year-old from Munich, who is a part of the Stal Gorzów squad in Poland, will join the Comets for the 2024 Championship campaign.

But this will not be her first time at the Northside arena – some may remember her from Round 4 of the Women’s Open Championship held at Northside back in June.

Liebmann scored a flawless 12-point maximum that day but also her heat win times were very fast and competitive to that of times regularly seen at the Northside Arena throughout last season.

Workington speedway promoter Andrew Bain is delighted at the prospect of the German International in the Comets septet next season.

He said: “When we saw Celina flying around Northside in June it stuck in our minds. She was very quick that day, her times proved that.

“So come the start of our team building for 2024, her name had to be on the team sheet. She already has experience of some of the tracks in the UK from the Women’s Open Championship.

“We got in touch with her and straight away her enthusiasm was fantastic, she was very complimentary of the track and how she loved it here in June – so from that it was easy to get her on board for 2024.

“Celina is adding to an already strong team for 2024, so our fans should be getting very excited! She will be a valuable asset to the team in the Championship next season and we can only see even more improvement from her.”

Celina will join the Comets line-up with an assessed 4.00 average.
