A £14.3 million project to improve roads in West Cumbria is set to start on Monday.
The cash, from the Government’s Levelling UP Fund, will be used to upgrade the A5086 between Cockermouth and Egremont and A595 south of Sellafield.
It will include resurfacing, drainage work and bridge repairs.
Work is due to start on the first phases of the project on Monday:
- A5086 between Rowrah and Crossgates – with work to take place over a six-week period, in two phases. Phase one – Kirkland junction to Rowrah; phase two from Crossgates to Kirkland junction.
- A595 Whicham Valley – work to take place over a four-week period.
There will be a full road closure during each phase, with a signed diversion route in place.
The work will be carried out under a daytime road closure from around 7.30am to 6pm.
If residents or businesses require access to their property, they are asked to talk to the traffic marshal on site during the work, but are advised there may be some delays accessing properties.
Access will be maintained for emergency services during the work.
Work will continue on the scheme over the next 12 months.
The next project is scheduled for the end of February on the A5086 Parkside. A595 schemes are scheduled to start after the Easter holidays, with night-time road closures to minimise disruption. More information will be available nearer the time, Cumberland Council said.
